The Commissioner of Official Languages congratulates Moncton on declaring itself
officially bilingual
The Commissioner of Official Languages, Dr. Dyane Adam, warmly congratulates Moncton City Council on the adoption of a resolution declaring the city officially bilingual. "This resolution represents the culmination of efforts over many years to create a City that fully responds to the needs of both of its linguistic groups. Attitudes toward bilingualism have greatly evolved in Moncton over the past thirty years. The City has come a long way and each generation of municipal councillors has contributed to moving this question forward. The resolution adopted today holds promise for the future and is a concrete illustration of the principle of the advancement towards the equality of status and use of English and French in Canadian society, as set out in our Constitution," stated Dr. Adam.
"This is an unprecedented year in the linguistic history of New Brunswick and I congratulate the City of Moncton for its vision, courage and leadership in making this important and highly symbolic decision," concluded the Commissioner.
