FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Declaration by the Commissioner of Official Languages, Dyane Adam, on the death of the Right Honourable Pierre Elliott Trudeau
"Pierre Trudeau became Prime Minister of Canada at a time in the country's history which was open to all hopes. His dream and his vision have led to the building of a more open and welcoming society, where the two linguistic communities participate in a life that is more enriching for all citizens. His ideal was a Canada with two official languages, an ideal which today allows both English and French-speaking Canadians, representing many different backgrounds, to thrive and to feel that their country reflects their reality. He inspired a whole generation of Canadians who today are bilingual.
His work remains incomplete but he has shown us the way. Each and every one of us must continue to build a better society based on the foundations that he has passed on to us."
