Based on 2001 Census data of those between the ages of 20 and 49, the visible minority population consists of 1.95 million people, about 15% of the total population in this age group, and about 225,000 (11%) are bilingual. More than half of the bilingual visible minority population in this age group live in the province of Quebec. The visible minority population in this age group who are bilingual and who also have a university degree is 85,565.
The Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages will continue to take a keen interest in Canada’s visible minority communities to monitor the advancement of English and French in Canadian society.
